Lee becomes first Korean shuttler to win Indonesia Open men's singles



JAKARTA (AFP): Lee Hyun Il on Sunday became the first South Korean to win the men's singles in the Indonesian Open badminton tournament when he beat Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana in straight sets 15-10, 15-3.
"I feel happy," said Lee through an interpreter after taking the title and the 20,000-dollar prize, saying he had pushed for rapid rallies after realizing that Boonsak was avoiding fast games.
Lee said he had had to exert himself more when facing Indonesia' s Sonny Dwi Kuncoro in the semi-finals. He got through to the finals of the 250,000 dollar event only after a tough rubber of 6-15, 15-7, 15-7
"I have to admit that my opponent is much better, his smashes are very steep and fast. I did not think the game would go that fast," Boonsak said.
"In the second set, I did not know what to do."
